Most people, including myself, love bread. Eating a good loaf of bread can be incredibly satisfying, and who doesn't love a good sandwich or burger?
Even if you're diabetic (or just watching your carb intake), you can still eat bread. In recent years, dozens of low-carb breads have been available in grocery stores or online.
In this article I will review 10 of the most popular and widespread brands.

How to make low carb bread
low carb bread usually uses a lotDietary fiber(cannot be digested and does not affect blood sugar levels) and/or nut flour (has more fat but less carbohydrates than regular flour).
This means that you shouldn't expect low-carb bread to exactly match the taste and texture of regular bread.
Low carb bread doesn't taste like regular bread, but that doesn't mean it isn't tasty! Like regular bread, low-carb bread comes in many different shapes and sizes, including sliced bread, muffins, scones and tortillas.
How do I categorize the different brands
All brands included have less than 12 grams of net carbohydrates per serving. portion.
Net carbohydrates are calculated as total carbohydrates minus fiber andsugar alcohol. We focus on net carbohydrates rather than total carbohydrates because fiber and most sugar alcohols are not converted to glucose and therefore do not affect blood sugar levels.
I gave each brand a score of 1 to 5 based on the following factors:
- Does it feel and look like bread?
- Does it taste like bread?
- Are the portions reasonable? (Some brands list ½ tablet as a serving...)
- How does it affect my blood sugar levels? (this may vary from person to person)
Of course, these are subjective measurements, but I hope this review still gives you an idea of which brands are good and which ones have room for improvement.
I list brands based on net carbs per serving. portion, from lowest to highest.
Pan de molde ThinSlim
Net carbs: 0 grams
Rating: 2.5 stars
At first glance, it looks like ordinary white bread, but the slices are tiny, and when baked, they take on the texture and taste of cardboard. I really don't like this bread at all.
The only reason I'm giving it two and a half stars is because it's very low in calories and has no net carbs. But I'd rather eat some extra calories and carbs and enjoy the bread. I will not buy this brand again.
The mix of ingredients and the set-up of the production plant also mean that the bread is not suitable for those who need to avoid gluten, soy, peanuts, tree nuts or dairy products.

Julian Bakery Paleo Thin (Pan de almendras)
Net carbs: 1 gram
Rating: 4 stars
This is an almond based bread so the net carbs are very low. It can be purchased online or at select specialty stores (I found it at Whole Foods).
Since it's made with almond flour, the bread is dense and tastes best when toasted, but it's still great for stuffing. The slices are huge and the almond base makes it very blood sugar-friendly. I had a great time eating.
It is made in a gluten-free facility, so it is suitable for most people without allergies to nuts, coconut flour or eggs.

PBH Foods Whole Bagel
Net carbs: 1 gram
Rating: 4.5 stars
I discovered the brand on Instagram and love several of their specialty products, including this Everything Bagel. (Although not an actual bagel, it is only shaped like a loaf of bread.)
The reason it is so low in carbohydrates is that the main ingredients are almond flour, eggs and oil. It also means that the bagel will sizzle when toasted due to the high fat content.
Since it has more fat than carbs, I eat it with little to no blood sugar impact. Overall, this is one of the best low carb breads I've tried.
This bread is gluten, soy and dairy free but is flavored with garlic and onion and may not be suitable for people withFODMAPintolerance.

Linda's happy cookies
Net carbohydrates: 1.5 g
Rating: 4 stars
One could debate whether these cookies qualify as bread, but I liked buttering them, so I guess they are.
They have just the right amount of butter and a slightly crumbly texture that is firm enough to cut but crumbles easily in the hand, even while baking.
Some may find the taste a little boring, but I like it and it has no effect on my blood sugar.
Cookies are small (about 1.3 oz). They are high fiber baked goods and not suitable for anyone trying to avoid wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs or dairy.

Sola sliced bread (golden wheat)
Net carbs: 3 grams
Rating: 4 stars
This is a great low carb sliced bread. It is very soft and tastes, smells and bakes like regular bread.
The main reason I don't give this bread high marks is that the slices are on the smaller side and one slice is not very filling. Even if you eat two slices (6g net carbs total), I still don't think they're as filling as a Sola burger bun.
However, it is a real low carb bread, which hardly affects my blood sugar level.
It's made with plenty of fiber to keep your net carbs low. Bread is also made with wheat, soy, dairy and eggs, so it's not a good choice if you want to stay away from these ingredients.

BFree sandwich bread with brown seeds
Net carbs: 6 grams
Rating: 4.5 stars
I really like the taste, texture and size of this bread. It has a slightly nutty taste and the only reason I don't give it a 5 star rating is that it seems to have a small effect on my blood sugar (probably because it has a small amount of molasses).
One of the great things about this bread, aside from it tasting great, is that I found it at my local grocery store and online so it was readily available.
The main ingredients in this bread are potato flour and other wheat flour, so it is gluten-free and a good option for those who want to avoid gluten.

Simple burger bun
Net carbs: 6 grams
Rating: 4.5 stars
In my opinion, this is one of the best low carb breads. Each bun is the size of a regular hamburger bun and has a light and airy texture. Best of all, they taste like wheat bread.
I love to bake my bread and this bakes beautifully without melting or turning to cardboard.
A loaf of bread has 140 calories, which come from various sources of fiber, fat, milk and dairy products. So although it is low carb, this bread is not suitable for people who do not eat gluten, soy, dairy or eggs.

Pan multigrano ligero Nature's Harvest
Net carbohydrates: 7 g (per 1 slice)
Rating: 4 stars
Nature's Harvest is another bread you'll see on most grocery store shelves. It is baked by a large commercial bakery that also bakes other popular brands including Thomas Muffins and SaraLee Bread.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and Naturens Høst bread lived up to my expectations for the look and feel of a sandwich bread. However, like Dave's Killer Bread (see below), I found the bread too sweet for my taste.
Remember that a portion is 2 slices not one. They're good enough to list the carb count for 1 and 2 slices on the package, so it's easy to work out how many carbs you're consuming (the 7g net carbs listed are for one slice).
It's a wheat-based bread that's baked with soy, so it's not a good option for those trying to avoid gluten or soy.

Dave's Killer Bread - thinly sliced with seeds
Net carbohydrates: 10 grams
Rating: 3.5 stars
Dave's Killer Bread is another brand you'll see on most supermarket shelves, at least if you're in California. It is considered to be the best selling organic bread in the United States.
I chose Good Seed Thinly Sliced Bread for this review simply because it has the lowest net carb count in my local grocery store.
It looks and feels like any regular sandwich bread slice, but I think the slices are a little on the small side. I also think the taste is a little too sweet and it has a big effect on my blood sugar, which doesn't work for me, so I don't see myself buying it again.
It's a wheat and seed bread with a few grams of added sugar (which probably explains why I think it's sweet), so it's not suitable for those who want to avoid gluten.

English Muffin Ezekiel 4:9
Net carbohydrates: 12 grams
Rating: 3.5 stars
This isn't the lowest carb bread, but it's been a staple of mine for years. It has a mild, almost nutty flavor and smells like whole wheat rolls when baked.
It is made entirely of sprouted kernels without flour and therefore has a lowglucose levelthan regular bread (36 vs. 75 or so for most other breads). This means that it should produce fewer blood sugar spikes than regular bread because it is converted to glucose in the blood more slowly. However, I often feel a relatively noticeable effect on my blood sugar when I eat this bread.
The portion size is the only other thing that really bothers me about this bread, as a serving is only ½ loaf.
The muffins are vegan, but made with sprouted wheat and soy, so not for everyone who wants to avoid them.

If you don't see your favorite low carb bread, let me know and I'll add it. The only requirement is that 1 portion or slice of bread must not contain more than 12 grams of net carbohydrates.
I have tried many low carb products. Here are some of my other comments:
